What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a condition that interrupts breathing during sleep. Apnea literally means a lack of breath. With sleep apnea, the brain does not receive sufficient oxygen, so it tells the body to awaken, partly or fully, to restore breathing. This can occur hundreds of times in a sleep session, so the sleep apnea sufferer never achieves the deep, REM sleep he or she needs to feel rested and stay healthy.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), the most common form of sleep apnea, occurs when soft tissues in the mouth or throat block airflow. About 90% of sleep apnea sufferers don’t notice a problem during sleep. They may notice daytime drowsiness, irritability, lack of concentration, and other symptoms that occur during waking hours. Most often, a person’s sleep partner notices a lack of breathing, deep gasps or choking during sleep, and/or loud snoring.
